People are becoming obese earlier and staying obese longer – until the health risks catch up with them.

This finding is universal: Poverty or a non-industrialized economy no longer seems to be associated with a normal weight population.

So what, you might say?

The costs of obesity are crushing, literally crushing: In some Western countries, more is spent on treatment of obesity and diabetes than on police, fire service, and the judiciary combined.

This is not a sustainable situation.

The solution involves a massive realignment of our priorities and economic system. A combination of “nudges” and legislation will be required. Do we have the strength of mind to do it?
