A cup of coffee and a blueberry muffin seems like a pretty light, healthy breakfast, no? Slips down
easily and can be consumed on-the-go.
Whoa! The UK’s Obesity Health Alliance says that one muffin can contain your entire day’s allowance of sugar! The blueberries in the muffin do not make it into a healthy offering, either. Quite often, the “blueberries” are not even real fruit, but a chemical nightmare topped off with food color.
If you want a muffin:
Best choice: make your own, replacing part or all of the white flour with whole wheat or oatmeal flour.
Next best: buy mini-muffins (two-biters) from a supermarket. These muffins have nutrition information prominently displayed; or, split your 500-calorie monster muffin muffin with a friend.
Worst choice: coffee shop and bakery muffins. Typically the biggest and most sugary.
